Die kanadische Regierung hat sich mit der Inuit-Gruppe der Qikiqtani Inuit Association darauf geeinigt, ein neues Meeresschutzgebiet in arktischen Gewässern zu erschaffen. Mit 50.500 Quadratmeilen (umgerechnet rund 130794,4 Quadratkilometer – oder, weil man das immer so macht: mehr als 18 Millionen Fußballfelder) wird es Kanadas mit Abstand größtes nationales Meereserhaltungsgebiet werden. Zugleich verdoppelt sich damit die Fläche der gesamten kanadischen Schutzgebiete.
Das Gebiet liegt in Lancastersund (auf Englisch: Lancaster Sound, auf Inuktitut: Tallurutiup Imanga). Es ist ein Lebensraum für Beluga, Grönlandwal, Narwal, Walross, Eisbär und Robbe.
